The goddess Aphrodite awarded Paris, son of king Priam of Troy, the most beautiful woman in the world in return for his judging her to be the most beautiful of the goddesses. That most beautiful woman happened to be Helen, wife of king Menelaus of Sparta. Paris took Helen back to Troy with him and Menelaus organized an expedition from all the Greek states to go to Troy and bring her back.
This turned into a ten-year siege, which finally ended when the Greeks penetrated the city walls by subterfuge. They pretended to leave the battle, leaving behind a large wooden horse. The Trojans dragged the horse inside their city, and that night Odysseus and the other Greek warriors hiding inside it opened the gates of the city and let the Greek armies in.
