The free softwares alone don't remove them all. PC experts advise you to use multiple programs as they only detect certain ones, not all.

Beware..there are some programs that are free but contain their own spyware as well, while not removing anything for you at all but stupid cookies you could find yourself.

As for malware and trojan viruses, those are a lot harder. Some are so persistent you have to boot up in safe mode in order to remove it without it reinstalling itself. Check http://www.symantec.com/business/securit...

Sometimes, the best thing to do is reformat. Keeps your computer nice and clean, too.
